Our Assam Hunwal 2nd Flush TGFOP1 loose leaf black tea is a rich, full-bodied single-estate Assam with deep orange-red liquor, satisfying malt and a distinctive gently spiced finish. Grown at unusually high altitude for Assam and harvested during the prized second flush season, it delivers a bold, characterful cup that takes milk beautifully while remaining equally rewarding enjoyed black.
Assam Hunwal 2nd Flush TGFOP1 Loose Leaf Black Tea
Hunwal Estate lies in the Jorhat district of Assam, south of the Brahmaputra River, and is noted for growing tea at altitudes of up to around 1,000 metres — unusually high for the region. This cooler setting slows leaf growth and is widely associated with the tea’s richer, more concentrated character.
This is a second flush Assam, produced during the May to June harvest period when the region’s black teas are prized for their depth, malt and fuller cup. The TGFOP1 grade indicates a carefully selected orthodox leaf with fine golden tips and a more refined appearance than everyday broken-grade Assams.
Bold Malt, Spice and a Lingering Finish
In the cup, this Assam Hunwal 2nd Flush TGFOP1 loose leaf black tea brews to a deep, glowing orange-red infusion with excellent clarity. The flavour is full, malty and satisfying, with a softly spicy edge and a finish that lingers pleasantly after each sip.
It has the strength expected of a good Assam, but with enough estate character and balance to feel more individual than a straightforward breakfast blend.
High-Grown Assam with Distinctive Estate Character
What sets Hunwal apart is its combination of second flush depth, orthodox TGFOP1 grading and unusually elevated terroir for Assam. Similar specialist descriptions highlight its rich body, strong flavour and orange-red liquor, all of which make it a compelling choice for those who enjoy powerful black tea with a little more nuance.

A Rewarding Assam for Breakfast or Afternoon
Assam Hunwal is an excellent morning tea, particularly for those who enjoy a strong, satisfying brew with milk. At the same time, it is well worth trying black, where the spice, malt and estate individuality show more clearly.
It is a tea with enough structure for everyday drinking, but enough distinction to merit closer attention.
How to Brew Assam Hunwal 2nd Flush TGFOP1
Use freshly boiled water at 100°C and add one heaped teaspoon per cup. Steep for 3 to 4 minutes for a bright, lively infusion, or up to 5 minutes if you prefer a fuller, stronger cup.
This tea takes milk very well. If drinking it black, a slightly shorter brew of around 3 minutes helps keep the finish clean and the spiced notes well defined.
